On 18 June, the US State Department instructed all embassies and consulates abroad to resume scheduling interviews for student visa applicants. This officially ends a four-week pause in processing that began on 27 May — a period that raised concerns, especially given that May to August is the peak season for student visa issuance. In 2024, 70% of all student visas were granted during this timeframe.
Enhanced Screening Now Mandatory
With the restart, all visa applicants will now undergo expanded online and social media screening. Officers are instructed to review applicants’ digital presence for signs of:
- Hostility toward the US or its institutions
- Support for terrorism or threats to US national security
- Unlawful antisemitic harassment or violence
- Political activism that could continue in the US
Applicants are asked to make their social media accounts public. Officers must retain screenshots of any concerning content. This applies to both new and returning students.
Expect Delays and Lower Capacity
While visa appointments are resuming, the new screening process is expected to increase workload. Embassies may need to reduce the number of interviews scheduled compared to previous years. The cable urges posts to balance capacity with the demands of proper vetting.
